Student Visa Guide for Asia

Student Visa Guide for Asia

Step-by-step visa guides for South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan — requirements, timelines, and tips.

Student Visa Overview

Obtaining a student visa is one of the most important steps in your study abroad journey. Each country has different requirements, processing times, and visa categories. In this guide, we walk you through the visa process for South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

South Korea Student Visa

The D-2 visa is for degree students, the D-4 visa for language study. The D-2 allows part-time employment up to 20 hours/week. Required documents include passport, visa application, certificate of admission, proof of financial support (~$10,000), and transcripts. Processing time: 2–4 weeks.

Japan Student Visa

Japan's Student Visa requires a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from your host institution. The COE process can take 1–3 months. With a work permit, students may work up to 28 hours/week during school and 40 hours/week during holidays. Required documents include passport, COE, proof of financial support (~$15,000), and health certificate.

Taiwan Student Visa

Taiwan issues a Resident Visa for students enrolled in approved institutions. After arrival, students apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC). Students may work up to 20 hours/week with a work permit. Required documents include passport, admission letter, health certificate, and financial proof (~$4,000). Processing time: 1–3 weeks.

Common Visa Application Tips

  • Start early — processing times can be unpredictable.
  • Double-check document requirements on embassy websites.
  • Apostille or authenticate documents before traveling.
  • Make copies of all documents for your records.
  • Maintain adequate financial proof — bank statements should be recent.

What If My Visa Is Denied?

Visa denials are uncommon for legitimate students. Common reasons include insufficient financial proof, incomplete documentation, or concerns about intent to return. If denied, ask for the specific reason, address the issue, and reapply.

After You Arrive

All three countries require international students to register with local immigration authorities within 14–90 days after arrival. This registration issues your official residence card.
